The goal is to build a 600HP LBZ with 10K that meets a bunch of goals like driveability, completeness, reliability, towing, and potential for long-term dependability. There may be a few other things tossed into the judging mix - but you get the idea. Paul Wilson goes head-to-head with Wehrli Custom Fab's Tyler Franzen (aka Tranny). The so-called judge in this orgy of f-bombs, disputes, and other rowdy behavior is none other than Chris Ehmke. Tighten the seat-belt for this one!

Gale Banks demonstrates the Duramax L5P's ability to deliver astonishing head flow numbers when compared to the LML. In this episode, recorded last May at Banks Power HQ near Los Angeles, Nick Pregnitz and Paul Wilson learn how the movement of fuel in the cylinder helps make more power during combustion. The swirl can help deliver oxygen to ensure all the fuel burns in the cylinder. Without good swirl, the result would be a lot of smoke.

The Ford 6R140 is impressive with its smooth shifts, durability, and dependability. In this episode, Paul and Chris talk to Morgan Primm of Midwest Diesel and Auto, a recommended expert on the 6R140. Morgan describes the 6R's typical problems but he also explains that even a completely failed transmission still works unlike its GM and Dodge counterparts. Primm describes upgrades and competition specs for the 6R.

Rudy's Diesel Rawlings Barnes joins Paul and Chris to talk about the company's Ford 6.4L drag truck - a 4.9 second @ 140 MPH in the 1/8th mile! Success in a diesel drag truck takes hard work with a full team of committed people. You won't believe the problems encountered and solved to get into the fours on the one-eighth mile.

Log into Craigslist - time for another budget build episode on the Diesel Performance Podcast. Wade McGinnis of Thoroughbred Diesel competes against Chris Ehmke for the best build with Paul Wilson as the moderator. Who can take an old 24V, spend 15K, and get 500 rwhp? The judging includes driveability, peak power, the complication of the build, completeness of the build, potential problems, and a new term - overall bad-assery!

Jeremy Shultz drives a 1953 Chevy truck powered with a Duramax. The conversion project took more time than he liked but it was a conversion project - that's how it goes. In this episode, Jeremy explains where the truck came from and the various challenges and other frustrations he had to overcome. But it was worth it. The truck turns heads and no doubt inspires everyone with an old pickup in the barn.

Ford tuning presented challenges like every other platform tuned on the common rail diesel engine. So what does that mean for the truck owner? Calibrated's Nick Preignitz joins Paul and Chris to talk about tuning the Ford 6.7. Nick goes into detail about the process and why it may take months, if not years, to develop tuning solutions for a new platform.

This is a podcast of unusual diesel performance stories. First is how Jared Delekta got hired by Industrial Injection. The second is how I-J's incredible triple turbo came to be. It started as a joke. Really.

Chris Ehmke interviews Jared in this episode of the Diesel Performance Podcast. The show concludes with an in-cab interview with Blake Kirlin, the winner of the Stealth 64 G2 for the LB7.

The Diesel Performance Podcast digs into the archives and posts an oldie but goodie - the Ultimate Tow Rig episode from January 2016. In this episode, local experts Nick Priegnitz and Tim Slater discuss with Paul what they would wish for in a towing package, if money was no object. As you listen, you'll hear a lot about all the details required haul something heavy without worry whether your truck will make it.

The H1 Hummer needed a new head gasket for its factory 6.5. Rather than keep the factory engine, the owner wanted an old 12V Cummins with an Allison from a bread truck - but Rob Hartman convinced him to go with an LBZ Duramax. The donor came from a wrecked 2006 with 160K. Only three months, and 130 hours of labor, the 2003 H1 Hummer had a new identity. The LBZ has 60% injectors, 68mm turbo, and an Allison 6 speed with a GM 261 transfer case. The project sits on 40's with a three-inch body lift, stock CP3 and a lift pump.

All of this is fascinating - of course - especially when you hear how Rob fit everything into the H1's engine bay.

This is the audio version of a video posted on Facebook and YouTube.

The Diesel Performance Podcast visits Banks Power and talks with Gale Banks about the new Duramax L5P.

We see the L5P disassembled with each component (turbo, connecting rods, pistons, injectors, cylinder head, and more) - examined and compared to the Duramax LML. It's a fascinating up close look at the new engine and all the performance improvements General Motors included. Bottom line: the L5P redefines and reshapes diesel like never before. Get ready for an exciting future in diesel performance.

Nick Priegnitz - owner of three very popular conversions - the Duraburb, '85 Scottsdale LB7, and the ApacheMAX - joins the podcast to talk about each build. Nick says conversions require plenty of passion in order to be successful. Otherwise, you can get frustrated quickly and find they can be overwhelming because of all the unique challenges involved. Of all the conversion projects, the ApacheMAX offered the greatest frustration and challenge - but turned out to be one of the more popular trucks around. The same is true for the Duraburb and Scottsdale. Both trucks garner all kinds of attention when they're posted on social media or seen in public. If you love conversions - this is the podcast you need to hear!

Eric Swanson joins the podcast to explain why Duraburbs are so cool.

Aug 18, 2017

One of the more popular diesel conversions around is the Duraburb. A Suburban, Tahoe, or Escalade with a Duramax engine. Duraburb is a Florida company started a decade ago when someone wondered out loud why no manufacturers made a diesel SUV. Company founder-owner Eric Swanson decided to try and the rest is history. In those 10 years, Duraburb has done 300 conversions for mostly affluent clientele. Duraburbs look just like they rolled off the manufacturer's assembly line - every switch, light, and gauge - just like the OEM built the truck.

In this episode, Eric explains to Paul and Chris why Duraburb exists and is so popular.

The 1970 Chevy C-10 looks the part - rust mixed with a turquoise green, regular cab. Under the hood and on the ground is a different story. The old Chevy sits on an '06 LBZ frame and the engine bay holds a compound set-up pushing 750 HP to the ground. The truck belongs to WCFAB's Ryan Werhli, manager of the shop's fab department. Ryan started the project two years ago after he found the original '70 Chevy truck on Craigslist. Since then the project has appeared on a magazine cover and just about everywhere else as an incredible conversion. Ryan tells the story to Paul and Chris in this episode of the Diesel Performance Podcast.

Conversion Month continues on the podcast with a conversation with Sean Patterson of Diesel Conversion Specialists. The company offers the harnesses and other components to install Cummins mechanical and common rail diesel engines into Fords and GM trucks. This is an interesting segment of the aftermarket because it continues to grow as more and more owners convert their trucks into dependable, mileage friendly and reliable vehicles. So what's the most popular project for Diesel Conversion Specialists? Paul and Chris find out.
